Student Section ~ Letter From The President ~ Our Mission ~ Student Bios ~ Meeting Minutes ~ Meeting Highlights
Student Section Information The executive board has been working diligently to come up with innovative ways to increase student enrollment
within FPHA. A survey was constructed for both current and prospective student members to address their ideas, expectations,
and future plans for the student section. Using the feedback given, the executive board plans to develop strategies to bring
the full benefits of membership to all student members. The student section is discussing a conference for students to refine areas of professionalism
including resume building, ethics, dressing appropriately, and networking. The conference will enable public health students
to become acquainted with one another and will serve as an opportunity to close gaps among the colleges and universities
in Florida offering programs in public health. Additional topics discussed but not finalized include: *Allowing MPH graduates, honorary membership into the
student section *Revising student memberships to allowing part-time students to join *Letters inviting all allied health and science related
majors to the student section *Planning for the 2009 FPHA annual conference. *Formulating more activities for the student section New Articles Happy New Year!
The Student Section is excited about our membership drive this year! Campus Liaisons are busy spreading the
word about both FPHA and the opportunities for student members within the organization. Jasmaine Shelford, a Doctorate
of Podiatric Medicine and MPH student at Barry University, is in the process of starting a new public students association
at her university. Jonathan Meadows, an MPH student at USF, has contacted the presidents of campus public health organizations
in order to recruit their members for FPHA. Brittany Marshall, also an MPH Health student at USF, is utilizing list
serves to lure new members into our ranks. Tolulope Akinbo, a UF Master of Public Health student, is actively using
the Student Section’s Facebook Group (Florida Public Health Association - Student Section) as a means to recruit new
FPHA student members at her university. LaShanda Washington, an MPH student at FAMU, is interacting with students in
other public health related disciplines to spread the word about our membership drive. Additionally, Victoria McBee,
another FAMU MPH student and the Student Section’s website liaison, is maintaining both the Yahoo and Facebook groups
to provide non-members with information on how to become a part of FPHA and the Student Section.
Additionally,
the Student Section is attempting to establish relationships and alliances with public-health related student organizations
outside of FPHA. We want to ask Student and Professional members of FPHA to spread the word to students at the colleges
and universities across the State of Florida about the FPHA Student Section. We are not only on a mission to expand
our Student Section but to also increase student membership and participation in FPHA. Archived Articles During
the FPHA Annual Education Conference in August 2009, the Student Section hosted C. Earl Fox, MD, MPH, Director of the Florida
Public Health Institute at their business meeting. Dr. Fox’s speech, entitled “Public Health Careers: Now
and Future,” provided pointers for success that could be utilized by both new public health professionals as well as
more seasoned ones. Door prizes were given away, including, gift baskets and movie tickets.

The Student Section has recently launched a Facebook group, entitled “Florida
Public Health Association - Student Section,” that provides a forum in which students across the State currently studying
or working in public health can interact. We hope that students in public health, allied health, nursing, and related disciplines
will communicate with us. Facebook provides information about public health organizations and activities on college
campuses; scholarships, fellowships, and internships; in addition to highlights of student accomplishments in public health.
FPHA members (non-students) are encouraged to join us and post information relevant to students and emerging public health
professionals. The Student Section still maintains a site on Yahoo! Group (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/FPHA_StudentSection/).
On this site, members and students can locate minutes from our monthly FPHA-SS Executive Board meetings and read email updates
about opportunities in public health.
We want to congratulate several of our members who were recently elected
to national offices in APHA. President Sheronika Denson, a DrPH student in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at FAMU, is the
2009-2010 Treasurer-elect and Brittany Marshall, an MPH student in Global Health Practice at USF and a member of the second
class of the Public Health Apprentice Program through the CDC, is the Student Assembly’s 2009-2010 Action Committee
Co-chair.
We hope that all FPHA members will enjoy a safe and happy holiday season – one that keeps food
safety and healthy personal practices in mind as we travel to eat and socialize with friends and family.
